How to Group Elements in Canva
If you want to group elements in Canva, select two or more elements and choose Group. Once grouped, Canva treats those elements as one unit, so you can move, resize, rotate, or reposition them together without having to adjust every piece individually.
It’s one of those small Canva features that can save you a surprising amount of time, especially when you're working with designs made up of text, images, shapes, icons, and other elements.
How to Group Elements in Canva on Desktop
There are two easy ways to select multiple elements on a computer.
You can click and drag your mouse across the elements you want to select. Or, if the elements aren't sitting right next to each other, hold Shift on your keyboard and click each element individually.
Once everything you want is selected:
Click Group on the floating toolbar.
Canva will combine the selected items into one group.
You can now move, resize, or rotate the group together.
Canva also has a keyboard shortcut. After selecting your elements, press Ctrl + G on Windows or Command + G on Mac to group them.
Grouping is particularly useful when you've created something like a title with decorative graphics, a logo with text, or a collection of elements that you want to keep in the same position relative to each other.
How to Group Elements in Canva on Mobile
Grouping works in the Canva mobile app too, although selecting multiple elements works a little differently without a mouse and keyboard.
Tap one of the elements you want to group. Open the More menu if necessary and choose Select Multiple. Then tap the additional elements you want to include.
Once your elements are selected, find Group in the editing toolbar and tap it.
The selected items will now behave as one group.
If you do a lot of detailed Canva work on your phone or tablet, learning Select Multiple is useful beyond grouping because it also makes it easier to move or edit several items at once.
How Do I Ungroup Elements in Canva?
Select the grouped elements and choose Ungroup from the floating toolbar.
The individual pieces will become separate elements again, allowing you to move or edit them independently.
You don't always have to completely ungroup something just to make a small change, either. Canva allows you to select an individual element inside an existing group and make certain edits while keeping the overall group intact.
Why Can't I Group Elements in Canva?
If the Group option isn't appearing, first make sure you've actually selected more than one element.
There are also a few exceptions. Canva currently allows most element types to be grouped, including charts, tables, and grids, but sheet elements can't be grouped. Content added through some third-party apps in Canva's Apps section may also not group normally with other design elements.
If you're having trouble selecting something because elements are overlapping, try using Canva's Layers controls or temporarily moving the top element so you can select the one underneath.
Can I Group Text and Images Together in Canva?
Yes. You can group text and images together in Canva.
For example, if you've created a photo with a headline, smaller caption, and decorative graphic, you can select all of those pieces and group them. That makes it much easier to move the entire design section without accidentally leaving one piece behind.
That's really the magic of grouping: Canva stops making you herd individual design elements around the page like tiny graphic-design cats.
