If you work for yourself, sooner or later you are probably going to need a digital version of your signature.
Maybe you are sending an invoice to a client. Maybe you are creating a contract, proposal, release form, or another document that needs to be signed and dated. And if your client lives in another city or another state, you probably do not want the process to become:
Print the document. Sign it. Scan it. Send it back.
Especially when plenty of people do not even own printers or scanners anymore.
I ran into this exact problem while preparing documents for one of my own clients. I wanted my signature ready to place on the document before I sent it, and I wanted a simple way to create a reusable digital signature without paying for another service.
Canva can do that.
Canva currently offers a free signature generator that lets you draw, type, or upload an existing signature, and signatures you save can be reused later inside Canva.
Here are three easy ways to create your own signature in Canva. It takes only a few minutes, costs nothing to create, stays available inside Canva, and gives you a signature you can reuse whenever another invoice, proposal, or client document comes across your desk.
And once you have it made, that tiny administrative problem is simply gone.
How Do You Create a Handwritten Signature in Canva?
If you want your digital signature to look like the way you actually sign your name, the easiest method is Canva's built-in Signature tool.
Start by opening Canva and creating a blank design. A Presentation works perfectly well because it gives you plenty of room to work.
Method 1: Draw It
From the editor:
Look at the menu on the left side of the screen.
Scroll down and open Tools.
Find the Signature option.
Select Create New Signature.
Choose Draw.
Canva's signature creator gives you three main options: Draw, Text, and Upload. With Draw, you can use a mouse, finger, or stylus to create the signature yourself.
If you have a stylus or drawing tablet, this is a great place to use it. You will have much more natural control over your handwriting.
But you do not need one.
A mouse works too.
How Do You Draw a Signature With a Mouse in Canva?
Once you select Draw, Canva gives you a small area where you can sign your name.
Choose your:
pen weight
signature color
writing style
Then simply sign.
Do not worry if the first attempt looks strange. Writing your signature with a mouse feels very different from writing with a pen. Canva lets you clear the signature or undo portions of what you have drawn, so you can keep experimenting until you get something you like.
Try it a few times.
When you are satisfied, choose Add Signature or save the signature.
One of the most useful parts of this feature is that Canva can save the signature for future use. The next time you open the Signature tool, you can reuse one you already created instead of drawing it again.
That makes this especially useful if you regularly create:
invoices
contracts
proposals
letters
client agreements
business forms
You create the signature once and keep it available.
Can You Type a Signature in Canva Instead?
Yes.
Method 2: Type It
If you do not care about reproducing your handwritten signature, choose Text instead of Draw.
Type your name or initials and select a handwriting-style font that looks appropriate.
You can also change the color.
Canva specifically supports typed signatures and lets you choose from its font library to create a signature-style version of your name or initials.
This is probably the fastest method if you simply need something that looks polished and signature-like.
It is also helpful for people whose handwritten signature is difficult to reproduce with a mouse.
Can You Upload Your Existing Signature to Canva?
Yes, and this may actually be the best option if you want your digital signature to look exactly like your real handwritten one.
Canva allows you to upload an existing signature image and save it for future use.
Method 3: Upload It
One simple way to do this is:
Sign your name on a clean sheet of white paper.
Take a clear photo of the signature.
Upload the image to Canva.
Crop the image closely around the signature.
Adjust the image if necessary so the signature is clear and dark.
Remove or minimize the background if needed.
Save the cleaned-up signature for future use.
This method gives you something much closer to your actual pen-and-paper signature because you are starting with the real thing instead of recreating it with a mouse.
Canva includes image-editing tools and supports background removal, as well as exporting designs in formats such as JPG, PNG, PDF, and PPTX.
If a transparent-background option is available on your Canva plan, a transparent PNG is particularly useful because you can place the signature over documents without carrying a white rectangle around it.
Can You Make a Signature in Canva Without Using the Signature Generator?
Yes.
Canva's regular Draw tool works too.
Open a blank canvas, go to Tools, select Draw, and choose the pen or marker style you want.
Then:
Set your line weight.
Choose your color.
Draw your signature directly onto the canvas.
Resize it as needed.
Export the finished signature.
This is useful if you want more room to work than the dedicated Signature tool gives you, or if you simply prefer Canva's regular drawing controls.
The advantage of the dedicated Signature tool is convenience and reuse.
The advantage of the Draw tool is flexibility.
Either one can get the job done.
How Do You Save a Canva Signature to Use on Other Documents?
Once your signature looks the way you want, place it on a clean canvas and export it.
For a standalone signature graphic, PNG is usually the most useful format.
If you can export it with a transparent background, even better.
That gives you a reusable signature image you can place inside documents, invoices, presentations, forms, PDFs, or other designs without having to recreate it every time.
Canva can also place saved signatures directly inside Canva Docs, and documents containing those signatures can then be downloaded or shared.
One important distinction: do not export the standalone signature itself as a PDF if your goal is a transparent signature image. A PNG is the more practical format for that job.
Use PDF when you are exporting the finished signed document.
Can You Add a Canva Signature to an Invoice or Contract?
Yes.
Once the signature is saved inside Canva or downloaded as an image, you can place it anywhere you need it.
For example, if you create an invoice in Canva, you can insert your saved signature at the bottom beside your name and date.
You can do the same with:
service agreements
proposals
approval forms
business letters
client documents
acknowledgments
Canva also allows saved signatures to be incorporated directly into Canva Docs, which means you do not necessarily have to leave the platform to create and sign a document.
That is especially handy for freelancers and entrepreneurs who are already using Canva to create their business documents.
Is a Canva Signature Legally Valid?
This is where it is important to separate creating a signature graphic from determining whether a particular document has been legally executed.
Canva describes its tool as an electronic signature generator for signing digital documents, contracts, and other files. However, Canva also states that it is the user's responsibility to make sure a generated signature meets the legal requirements for the document being signed.
So Canva can absolutely help you create and place your signature.
Whether that signature alone satisfies the legal requirements for a particular contract or transaction depends on the document, jurisdiction, parties involved, and signing process.
For everyday business documents, having a reusable digital signature can still make your workflow dramatically easier.
Want a smoother way to draw your signature digitally?
The UGEE UT2 Fun Drawing Pad gives you a standalone 10.36-inch 2K drawing surface with a paper-like NanoMatte finish, so you can write and draw with a stylus instead of wrestling with a mouse. Because it works without a computer, it can also double as a portable creative tablet for sketching, note-taking, and other digital work.
Use it to create a cleaner handwritten signature, then bring that signature into Canva for editing and reuse.
