How to Lock Elements in Canva So They Don’t Move

If you keep accidentally nudging text, images, logos, or other pieces of your Canva design out of place, locking them is the fix.
In Canva, locking an element prevents it from being moved, resized, or edited. You can also use Lock position only if you want the item to stay put while still allowing the content to be changed.
How to Lock an Element in Canva on Desktop
Click the element you want to lock.
Click the Lock icon in the floating toolbar.
Choose the lock option you want.
Canva gives you two useful choices:
Lock keeps the element’s position, style, and content from being changed.
Lock position only keeps the item in place but still lets you edit its content.
That second option is especially useful for things like text boxes, photo frames, or templates where you want people to update the information without wrecking the layout.
How to Unlock an Element in Canva
Select the locked element and click the Unlock icon in the floating toolbar.
If Canva still will not let you edit it, the entire page may be locked. Canva notes that you cannot unlock individual elements while the page itself is locked, so unlock the page first. Canva
How to Lock Elements in Canva Mobile
The process is similar in the Canva mobile app.
Tap the element you want to lock.
Look through the editing options for Lock.
Tap it to lock the selected element.
Select the element again and use Unlock when you want to edit or move it.
The lock feature works on individual items such as text boxes, images, and graphics, as well as entire Canva pages.
How to Lock Multiple Elements in Canva
You do not have to lock items one at a time.
On desktop, hold Shift while clicking the elements you want to select, then use the Lock option. Canva officially supports selecting multiple elements before locking them.
You can also group related pieces first if you want them to behave as one unit. I cover that separately in How to Group Elements in Canva.
Grouping and locking solve two slightly different problems:
Grouping makes several elements easier to move and resize together.
Locking keeps them from moving or changing at all.
Why Can’t I Move an Element in Canva?
If an element suddenly refuses to move, the first thing to check is whether it is locked.
Click or tap the element and look for the lock icon.
Another possibility is that the entire Canva page is locked. Canva says page locking affects all of the elements and the background on that page.
There is also a special case for some Canva Education designs. A teacher can lock elements in a way that students cannot unlock themselves. If Canva displays “Lock cannot be edited,” the student may need the teacher to change it.
What Does the Lock Feature Do in Canva?
Think of locking as putting painter’s tape around the parts of your design that are already finished.
Once something is locked, you can work around it without accidentally dragging it across the page, resizing it, or changing its style.
It is especially handy for:
logos
backgrounds
decorative graphics
finished text
template layouts
elements sitting underneath other objects
If you only need the element to stay in the same spot while the text or image remains editable, use Lock position only instead of the full lock.
One limitation is worth knowing if you make templates for other people. A normal lock is not necessarily the same thing as permanently preventing another editor from changing your design. That distinction has caused confusion among Canva users sharing editable templates.
