How to Add Captions in Canva and Customize Animated Highlight Colors

Captions have become an important part of how people watch videos, and not just for accessibility. A 2019 study by Verizon Media and Publicis Media found that 69% of surveyed consumers watched videos with the sound off in public places, while 25% did so even in private settings. The same research found that 80% were more likely to watch an entire video when captions were available.
Think about how often people scroll through videos at work, on public transportation, in waiting rooms, or anywhere else they don't necessarily want their phones making noise. Without captions, they might miss everything you're saying.
But plenty of people prefer captions even when they can hear the audio perfectly well. I'm one of them. Whether I'm watching Netflix, Hulu, or HBO, I almost always have captions turned on. They help me follow unfamiliar accents, catch dialogue I might otherwise miss, and understand technical language or names that aren't immediately recognizable.
For content creators and businesses, captions serve another purpose: they're an opportunity to reinforce your visual identity.
Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts offer built-in captioning tools, but their typography and customization options are relatively limited. You generally choose from a selection of preset styles rather than designing every aspect of your captions.
Canva gives you considerably more creative control. You can choose from its extensive font library, use custom uploaded fonts where your plan supports them, change colors, add text effects, and animate captions so individual words respond to the speaker's voice.
If you want captions that look like they belong to your brand rather than whichever social media app you're using, Canva is worth exploring.
How Do You Add Automatic Captions in Canva?
Canva can automatically transcribe spoken audio and turn it into captions that appear throughout your video. You don't have to type every word or manually synchronize each line with the speaker.
Here's how to get started:
Open an existing video project in Canva or create a new video design.
Upload your video and add it to your design.
Select Text from the left sidebar.
Scroll down to Dynamic text and click Captions.
Choose one of Canva's caption style presets.
Click Generate captions.
Canva will analyze the speech and add captions to your video timeline.
You can also find the caption generator under Apps by searching for Captions.
If you're working with multiple audio or video clips, check which media Canva is set to caption before generating the transcription.
How Do You Edit Automatic Captions in Canva?
Once Canva generates your captions, review the transcription before styling everything.
Automatic transcription can misunderstand names, slang, unfamiliar expressions, and words spoken over music. You may also find that certain captions appear too early or stay on screen longer than you'd like.
To edit them, select a caption segment in the video timeline or open the Captions panel and choose the line you want to correct.
You can change the wording directly. To adjust timing, select a caption segment in the timeline and drag its beginning or ending edge.
Play the video while reviewing your changes. Reading the captions without hearing the speech can make timing problems harder to spot.
How Do You Customize Canva Captions to Match Your Brand?
This is where Canva becomes particularly useful compared with adding captions directly inside a social media app.
Instagram and other platforms provide convenient caption styles, but their selections are designed for quick editing. You might get a bold style, a typewriter-inspired style, something playful, and a few other variations.
Canva gives you a much larger range of typography and design options.
After generating your captions, click a caption to select it. Use the editing toolbar to change its font, size, color, and available text effects.
You can choose typography that matches your other promotional materials, coordinate caption colors with your brand palette, and position the text so it works with your video composition.
If your brand uses a particular font, you may also be able to upload it to Canva through your Brand Kit, depending on your account's features.
For creators producing videos across several platforms, this makes it easier to maintain a recognizable appearance without relying on each platform's built-in caption presets.
Can You Use Canva's Caption Templates and Still Customize Them?
Yes. Canva offers more than 20 caption style packs, giving you a starting point for different combinations of typography, colors, and animations.
You don't have to keep every setting exactly as the template provides it.
Choose a style you like, generate your captions, and then customize the individual elements to better match your video.
One thing to remember is that choosing a caption preset again can reapply its original styling. If you've already customized your captions, use the appropriate editing controls instead of repeatedly selecting the original preset.
How Do You Animate Captions in Canva?
Animated captions can do more than display a sentence at the bottom of a video.
Some animations reveal words as they're spoken. Others highlight the active word, change its appearance, or create movement that follows the speaker's rhythm.
These effects are especially useful for short-form videos, where creators often want captions to be visually engaging without forcing viewers to read large blocks of text.
To animate your captions:
Select an existing caption in your Canva video.
Click Animate in the toolbar above the editor.
Look for the caption animation options.
Choose an effect such as Reveal, Highlight, or Snake.
Play your video to see how the animation follows the speech.
You can also explore other text animations, although not every animation works the same way as Canva's speech-synchronized caption effects.
How Do You Change the Animated Caption Highlight Color in Canva?
One of the most useful caption effects highlights individual words as the speaker says them.
But what happens when the animated highlight doesn't match your brand colors?
For example, you might choose bright yellow lettering against a black background, only to discover that the caption preset uses a pink animated highlight. When the highlight passes over the yellow words, the combination may become difficult to read.
Changing the regular text color won't necessarily change the animation color because those settings are controlled separately.
Here's how to fix it:
Click your existing captions to select them.
Click Animate in the toolbar above the editor.
Open the settings for your selected caption animation.
Scroll down until you find the animation's color control.
Click the current color and choose a new one.
Preview your video to make sure the highlighted words remain readable.
The key is to change the highlight color through Animate, not by selecting the caption style preset again.
The Captions panel is useful for choosing and applying styles, but the Animate panel is where you customize the animation itself.
That distinction matters when you want to keep your existing font and text colors while changing only the moving highlight.
How Do You Change the Intensity of Animated Captions in Canva?
Color isn't the only setting worth exploring.
Depending on the caption animation you've selected, Canva may offer additional controls that change how noticeable or energetic the effect appears.
Select your captions, click Animate, and look through the available settings for your chosen effect.
If an intensity control is available, experiment with it while previewing the video. A stronger animation might work for an energetic gaming clip or promotional Reel, while a more restrained effect may be better for an interview, tutorial, or educational video.
The idea is to make the captions engaging without distracting from what the speaker is saying.
Why Won't Canva Generate Captions?
If Canva isn't generating captions, there are a few things worth checking.
Does Your Video Have Clear Spoken Audio?
Canva needs recognizable speech to produce an accurate transcription. Background music, excessive noise, or distorted dialogue can interfere with caption generation.
Try lowering competing audio or improving the voice recording before generating captions again.
Has Your Video Finished Uploading?
When working on a desktop, make sure your video has completely uploaded to Canva before attempting to generate captions.
If caption generation still fails, try uploading the video again.
Are You Using Editable Captions?
Canva's editable caption generator is different from its accessibility or view-only captions feature.
If you want to correct the transcription, change the typography, animate individual words, and download the captions as part of your video, use Text → Dynamic text → Captions.
Can You Download Canva Videos With Animated Captions?
Yes. Once you've finished editing and customizing your captions, you can export the video with the captions included.
Click Share, select Download, and choose MP4 Video.
Before exporting, play the video from beginning to end. Check that the captions are accurate, the animation matches the speech, and the text remains readable against changing backgrounds.
Make Your Video Captions Part of Your Brand
Captions help viewers follow your videos whether they're watching with the sound off, having trouble understanding a particular phrase, or simply prefer reading along.
But they don't have to look like an afterthought.
Canva gives creators the freedom to go beyond a handful of built-in social media caption styles and develop something that feels consistent with the rest of their visual identity.
Start with an automatic caption preset, customize the typography and colors, and explore the animation options to make your words more engaging.
And when you want to change the color that highlights each spoken word, remember to select your captions and open Animate. That's where you'll find the animation controls without having to start your design over.
