Why Does My Microphone Cut Out in OBS? Fix Choppy Audio and Missing Words

If you're wondering why your microphone cuts out in OBS Studio, start with what happens to your voice during recording. Your microphone might sound fine elsewhere, but in OBS the first syllable disappears, quiet words vanish, or your voice cuts in and out between sentences. Then the first syllable disappears, quiet words vanish, or your voice cuts in and out between sentences. Before replacing the mic, check the audio filters. A noise gate or overly aggressive noise suppression may be silencing parts of your speech.

Why Does My Microphone Cut Out in OBS Studio?

A Noise Gate filter mutes sounds below a set level. That's useful for keeping fan noise out during pauses, but an Open Threshold that's too high can block soft consonants. A slow Attack Time can also clip the beginning of words. Noise Suppression and Windows microphone effects may create similar symptoms.

How Do I Find Which OBS Filter Is Cutting Out My Mic?

  1. Open OBS Studio and locate your microphone in the Audio Mixer.

  2. Open that source's menu and choose Filters. The menu location may differ between the horizontal and vertical mixer layouts.

  3. Temporarily disable the Noise Gate filter using its visibility toggle, then make a 20-second recording with quiet speech, pauses, and louder words.

  4. If your voice is still chopped, temporarily disable Noise Suppression and Expander filters one at a time. Record after each change.

  5. When the problem disappears, you've identified the filter or combination of filters to adjust. Re-enable only what you need.

OBS changed its Audio Mixer layout in version 32.1, but its microphone filters still work through the source's Filters controls. Avoid copying old screenshots blindly.

How Do I Fix Noise Gate Settings in OBS?

Open the microphone's Noise Gate filter and adjust the Open Threshold so normal, quieter speech opens the gate. Keep the Close Threshold lower than the Open Threshold, so it doesn't repeatedly snap shut between syllables. Shortening Attack Time can help preserve the start of a word; increasing Hold or Release can keep natural pauses from sounding abruptly chopped.

OBS lists defaults of -26 dB Open Threshold, -32 dB Close Threshold, 25 ms Attack, 200 ms Hold, and 150 ms Release. These are starting values, not universal settings. Test against your own voice and room noise. See the official OBS Noise Gate guide.

What if Noise Suppression Makes My Voice Sound Robotic?

Noise Suppression is designed to reduce steady background noise, not eliminate every sound in a loud room. If syllables sound watery or disappear, try disabling it for a test. If using Speex, reduce the suppression strength. RNNoise may sound better for some voices, but listen to an actual recording rather than assuming a preset is best.

Why Does My Mic Still Cut Out With All OBS Filters Off?

Check the input device and the operating system before blaming OBS. On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Sound → Input and select the correct microphone. Inspect its input level and, if your device offers Audio Enhancements, try switching those effects off. Some microphones expose the option under Additional device properties instead.

If it also cuts out in another recording app, check the cable, USB connection, interface gain, and microphone positioning. If the OBS meter moves normally but your recording loses words, check which audio track the microphone is assigned to.

How Can I Reduce Background Noise Without Losing My Voice?

Position the microphone closer to your mouth, angle its least-sensitive side toward the keyboard or fan, and lower unnecessary room noise first. A gentler Expander can reduce quiet background sounds without the hard on/off behavior of a gate. Test soft speech and loud reactions before your next livestream.

A Useful Upgrade for Better Mic Placement

If the microphone sits too far away, a movable boom arm can help position it nearer your voice without raising gain just to overcome distance. The InnoGear Microphone Boom Arm is listed in the E9T9 Gear Guide. It won't fix incorrect filter settings, so troubleshoot those first.
