Why I Slept on Blogging (And Why You Shouldn’t)

When I was rocking with my Hip Hop crew, The Rubber Peeple, folks kept telling me, “Y’all need a website.” Cool. Made sense. I figured, we’ll sell some music, post some videos, keep it moving.

So I jumped on Wix. I’ve got an art background, and their drag-and-drop setup? Easy money. I built out a homepage, added some videos, wrote a little “About Us.” Boom. Done.

But then came the expert advice:

“You need a blog.”

And I was like… “A blog? About what?”

I mean, I’ve got opinions. I can write. But back then, blogging felt like a digital diary — all “me, me, me.” I didn’t wanna write about my cat or what I had for dinner. Plus, it looked like a full-time job just to keep it going.

So I skipped it.

Fast forward to me checking our analytics and seeing... crickets. Barely any site traffic unless we pushed people there from socials. It was dry. No blog = no flow. And that’s when I realized:

I had no clue what I was doing.

Now, years (and a bunch of websites) later, I get it. Blogging ain’t just journaling — it’s one of the most powerful tools you’ve got to grow an online presence.

Let me break it down for you, real talk:

1. Blogging Drives Organic Traffic

Think of blogging like shouting out into the digital streets — but with value. Each blog post is a flare shot into the sky that says “Hey! I got the answers you’re looking for!”

You write about what you know, what you do, and what people want to learn. Every blog post is another doorway for folks to find you — straight from Google. You don’t need ads or gimmicks.

Just truth, value, and consistency.

Lesson: Be the knowledge people are Googling for. They’ll come knocking.

2. Blogging Builds Trust

You sell mic stands? Cool. So does Amazon. What sets you apart? Trust.

You can’t outspend the big dogs, but you can out-authenticate them. Blogging helps people get to know you — your vibe, your voice, your values. Whether you’re sharing your process, your wins, or your screw-ups, it all builds credibility.

Lesson: Let them see the human behind the hustle.

3. It Puts You in Front of the Right People

Talk about bamboo, and the pandas will come. Talk about breakbeats, and the B-Boys show up. Your content acts like a bat signal for your tribe.

Blogging filters out the noise and attracts the audience that actually wants what you’ve got. That’s the power of being intentional with your topics.

Lesson: The more specific your content, the stronger your magnet.

4. It Gives Your Opinions Purpose

You rant on Facebook, go off on Twitter, drop gems in IG captions — but what does it lead to?

Put that energy into your own blog. Then share the link. Now that fire take is bringing traffic back to your house, not just giving Zuckerberg free content.

Lesson: If you're gonna preach, might as well build your own church.

5. It Boosts Your SEO (Like, Big Time)

Google doesn’t love fancy. It loves fresh. Original. Relevant. Blogging is one of the easiest ways to feed the algorithm new content.

Each blog post is more proof that your site is alive, useful, and worth ranking. And when you drop the right keywords? Now you’re in the game.

Lesson: Blog = better Google juice.

6. It Makes You an Authority

The root of “authority” is “author.” Every time you write, you build credibility. You become the go-to. The one who knows what they’re talking about.

Tell your story. Break it down. Show receipts. People respect consistency and clarity — and blogging gives you both.

Lesson: Write what you know, and watch your reputation grow.

7. It Keeps You Relevant

If your site hasn’t changed in six months, people assume you ghosted. Blogging keeps the lights on. It tells your audience — and Google — that you’re active and dialed in.

Even quick posts or simple thoughts matter. It’s about rhythm, not perfection.

Lesson: Consistency is louder than hype.

I used to think blogging was for egomaniacs or people with too much time. Now I see it as what it really is: free marketing, trust-building, and audience connection — all in one.

I get natural traffic now. People find my posts, learn something, and stick around. The blog does the work while I’m not even looking.

If you’ve got a business, a brand, a message — and you’re not blogging? You’re sleeping on one of the biggest tools out there.

So wake up and write.

Let me know if you want a cleaner version for email or a website, or if you want to turn this into a newsletter or social post series.
