How to Use ChatGPT to Compare Products Before You Buy

Shopping online can get complicated fast, especially when you're comparing products with different specifications, features, prices, and customer reviews. One product might cost twice as much as another, but does that actually mean it's twice as good? And how do you know whether the cheaper alternative will do everything you need?
You can use ChatGPT to compare products before buying by giving it product names or shopping links, explaining your budget and requirements, and asking it to research specifications, customer reviews, compatibility, and overall value. ChatGPT can organize the information into side-by-side comparisons, explain unfamiliar technical terms, and help you narrow your choices.
I wish I'd started doing this sooner.
When I first began using ChatGPT a couple of years ago, I primarily used it to answer questions and help me create educational materials. As a homeschooler, I was building workbooks, worksheets, lesson plans, and other learning resources. I quickly realized how much time AI could save me.
What hadn't occurred to me yet was that I could also use it as a personal shopping assistant.
I'm a streamer, DJ, graphic designer, illustrator, and voice actor. Between those activities, I'm constantly buying equipment: computers, webcams, microphones, audio interfaces, cables, USB hubs, Stream Decks, and all kinds of accessories.
I'd purchased several computers before it occurred to me that ChatGPT could help me compare their specifications and understand what I was actually paying for.
These days, it's one of my favorite ways to research a purchase.
How Do You Use ChatGPT to Compare Products?
You can start by opening ChatGPT and describing what you're shopping for. You don't necessarily need to know which products you want yet.
For example, instead of searching through dozens of computer listings, you could ask:
I'm looking for a Windows computer under $700 that can handle gaming, livestreaming through OBS, and basic video editing. I want at least 16GB of RAM, plenty of USB connections, and a processor capable of running several applications simultaneously. Help me find suitable options and explain which specifications matter most for my needs.
ChatGPT can help you identify products, research their specifications, and explain the differences.
You can also be specific about what you don't want.
As a voice actor, for example, I might prioritize a quiet computer because excessive fan noise can interfere with recording. Someone else might care more about portability, battery life, or graphics performance.
The more ChatGPT understands about how you intend to use a product, the more useful its recommendations can become.
Step 1: Tell ChatGPT What You're Shopping For
Start with the product category and what you need the item to accomplish.
You might be looking for a gaming monitor, an affordable microphone, a refrigerator, a camera, or a new laptop.
Rather than simply asking which one is best, explain how you intend to use it.
A professional photographer and someone taking family vacation pictures may have completely different camera requirements. Similarly, the best microphone for podcasting isn't necessarily the best choice for recording vocals in a home studio.
ChatGPT can help distinguish those differences before you spend money.
Step 2: Give ChatGPT Your Budget and Requirements
Tell ChatGPT how much you're willing to spend, which features are essential, and which ones would simply be nice to have.
For example:
Find USB hubs under $60 that support at least 10Gbps data transfer, have their own external power supply, include both USB-A and USB-C ports, and connect directly to a USB-C computer port. Compare the strongest options and explain their advantages.
That's much more useful than asking for the best USB hub.
You're giving ChatGPT criteria it can use to eliminate products that don't fit your requirements.
You can even specify brands you prefer, brands you want to avoid, or features you don't want to pay extra for.
Step 3: Ask ChatGPT to Compare Products Side by Side
Once you've identified a few candidates, ask ChatGPT to build a comparison table.
You can provide the product names, model numbers, or links to the actual listings.
For example:
Compare these four products side by side. Include their prices, important specifications, compatibility, advantages, disadvantages, and warranty information. Highlight which products meet all my requirements and explain which offers the best value for my budget.
One of my favorite things about this approach is that I can continue narrowing the options.
If I decide I don't need a particular feature, I can tell ChatGPT to remove it from consideration. If I increase my budget, it can reconsider the available choices.
I don't have to restart my research every time I change my mind.
Can ChatGPT Compare Products From Amazon?
Yes. ChatGPT can help research and compare products sold on Amazon, including alternatives from different brands and retailers.
You can paste Amazon product links into your conversation or provide the product names and model numbers.
ChatGPT may be able to retrieve the listings and compare their specifications directly. However, some retailers restrict automated access, so it won't always be able to read every product page.
When that happens, I use another method: I copy the product specifications directly from the listing and paste them into ChatGPT.
You can also upload screenshots containing product details.
This is particularly useful when you're comparing several similar products and want to see their differences organized in one place.
For example, two USB hubs might both advertise 10Gbps data transfer, but one might only have a single port capable of that speed while the others are considerably slower.
That's the kind of detail I want to know before buying.
Can ChatGPT Explain Product Specifications You Don't Understand?
Absolutely, and this is one of the most valuable ways I use it.
You don't have to understand every technical specification before shopping. You can ask ChatGPT to explain what those specifications mean and why they matter.
When I was recently shopping for a powered USB hub, I ended up learning considerably more about USB technology than I'd expected.
I already understood that USB-A and USB-C described different connector shapes. What I hadn't fully appreciated was how much the USB version, data-transfer speed, and even the specifications of a tiny adapter could affect a connection.
I learned about USB bandwidth, different USB generations, and the difference between externally powered and bus-powered hubs.
That knowledge helped me evaluate the products I already owned before buying anything new.
I eventually chose an ORICO powered USB hub for my streaming computer, but the real value of the research was understanding why its features were appropriate for my setup.
And I can apply that same knowledge to future purchases.
If you encounter a specification you don't understand, ask ChatGPT something like:
Explain the difference between these two specifications in plain language. Tell me how each one might affect performance for the way I plan to use this product.
You can also ask whether a more expensive feature is necessary for your particular needs.
Sometimes a higher specification provides a meaningful advantage. Other times, you're paying for performance you may never use.
Understanding that difference can save you money.
How Can You Use AI to Compare Customer Reviews?
Customer reviews can be extremely useful, but reading hundreds of them takes time.
ChatGPT can help summarize reviews, identify recurring complaints, and organize customer feedback into useful categories.
For example, you could copy a collection of product reviews and ask:
Analyze these customer reviews. Identify the most frequently mentioned advantages and complaints. Separate recurring issues from isolated experiences, and tell me which concerns would matter most for someone using this product for livestreaming.
This can be particularly useful when you're buying technology.
A USB hub might have hundreds of positive reviews from customers who use it for keyboards, mice, and flash drives. Those reviews can be perfectly legitimate.
But if I intend to connect multiple cameras and other streaming equipment, I want to know whether customers using more demanding devices have experienced disconnections or other issues.
ChatGPT can help look for those patterns.
It can also compare the reviews of competing products, highlighting where customers consistently praise one product or criticize another.
For the best results, provide actual review text or ask ChatGPT to use accessible review sources. A small sample of reviews won't necessarily represent every customer's experience, and it's worth checking the most relevant complaints yourself.
How Do You Use ChatGPT Shopping Research?
ChatGPT also has a dedicated Shopping Research experience designed for product discovery and detailed comparisons.
You can begin with a shopping-related question and select a Research option when it's offered, or select Research from products already displayed in ChatGPT.
Depending on your version of ChatGPT, you may also see a shopping research option in the tools menu.
Shopping Research asks questions about your preferences, budget, and requirements before exploring suitable products.
It can produce a personalized buyer's guide containing product recommendations, specifications, comparisons, advantages, disadvantages, and links to retailers.
You can also refine the results while researching.
For example, if ChatGPT recommends several microphones but you decide you only want USB microphones, you can narrow the selection without starting over.
The experience is available to eligible logged-in users, including Free users, although usage limits and available features can vary.
You don't have to use the dedicated Shopping Research feature to compare products, either. Ordinary ChatGPT conversations can be very effective when you supply detailed requirements and product information.

Can ChatGPT Find Cheaper Alternatives to Expensive Products?
Yes. This is another reason I enjoy using AI for shopping research.
Sometimes I know exactly which product I want, but I don't particularly want to pay what that product costs.
Maybe I'm interested in an Elgato accessory, for example, but I'd like to know whether Maono or another manufacturer offers something comparable for less money.
Instead of researching every competing brand individually, I can ask:
I like this product, but it's outside my budget. Find less expensive alternatives that offer similar functionality. Compare their specifications, compatibility, construction, and customer feedback. Explain what I would gain or sacrifice by choosing each alternative.
This is especially useful when a product category has a wide price range.
You may discover that the more expensive product has features you genuinely need. You might also find a much more affordable alternative that accomplishes the same thing for your particular setup.
Brand reputation, warranty coverage, build quality, and long-term reliability are still worth considering, but ChatGPT can help you evaluate those factors instead of assuming the most expensive product is automatically the best.
Can You Use ChatGPT to Identify Products From Pictures?
Yes. You can upload a photograph of a product and ask ChatGPT to help identify it.
This is useful when you find something in a store, inherit an accessory, or come across equipment without its original packaging.
Take a clear photograph of the product, including its label, model number, or recognizable features if possible.
Then ask:
Help me identify this product. Find its specifications, explain what it does, and show me comparable products currently available.
ChatGPT can analyze the image and, when web search is available, look for related product information.
An exact identification isn't always possible from a photograph alone, especially when several models look similar. Including the model number can make the search considerably more accurate.
You can also use this method to identify unfamiliar connectors, accessories, or equipment before searching for replacements.
Can ChatGPT Track Prices and Notify You About Deals?
Yes. Eligible ChatGPT accounts support scheduled tasks, including recurring checks for price changes.
I've used this kind of monitoring to look for PlayStation 5 deals.
Instead of repeatedly searching for a PS5 myself, I can establish criteria and have ChatGPT check periodically.
For example:
Check current PlayStation 5 prices and notify me when a new console is available for less than $500 or is discounted by at least 15%. Include the retailer, price, model, and product link.
ChatGPT can run scheduled checks and notify you when the requested conditions are met, subject to the task capabilities available on your account.
You can manage these tasks through ChatGPT's Scheduled section.
Free users can access scheduled tasks where available, with a limit of three active tasks and daily scheduling restrictions. Plus users currently have a limit of five active tasks, while other paid plans may have higher limits.
If you don't have a monitoring slot available, you can still save your shopping criteria in a document or spreadsheet and return to ChatGPT whenever you want to run a fresh comparison.
You can even have ChatGPT help you develop a reusable shopping checklist for expensive purchases.
That way, you're not starting from scratch every time you're ready to shop.
Can ChatGPT Help You Decide Which Product Is Best for You?
Yes, particularly when you've already narrowed your selection to two or three products.
At that point, you can stop asking which product is best in general and start asking which product is best for you.
For example:
I'm choosing between these two USB hubs. Both meet my minimum data-speed requirements. I care more about power delivery, connection reliability, and construction quality than the total number of ports. Compare them using those priorities and recommend the stronger choice.
That final part is important.
I recently compared several powered USB hubs that offered different combinations of ports, transfer speeds, power supplies, and physical designs.
One had more ports. Another had a stronger external power adapter. Some included individual power switches, which I didn't particularly want.
ChatGPT helped me separate the features that mattered from those I wasn't interested in paying for.
I ultimately made my own purchasing decision based on the information we'd gathered.
That's how I prefer to use AI when shopping.
I don't need ChatGPT to make every decision for me. I want it to help me understand the options well enough to make a better decision myself.
What Should You Check Before Buying Something ChatGPT Recommends?
ChatGPT is an excellent research assistant, but product information can change.
Prices fluctuate. Retailers update listings. Manufacturers release revised models. And sometimes an AI tool may misunderstand or retrieve incomplete specifications.
Before making a purchase, check that the exact product you're buying has the features you selected it for.
Pay particular attention to model numbers, compatibility, warranty terms, seller information, and current pricing.
If ChatGPT gives you a specification that seems questionable, ask where the information came from. You can also provide the manufacturer's own specifications and have ChatGPT compare those against the retailer's listing.
This is especially important for expensive electronics, where a single difference in processor, memory, connectivity, or generation can dramatically change a product's value.
Is ChatGPT Good for Shopping and Product Comparisons?
I think it's one of the most useful tools available for researching a purchase, particularly when the products you're comparing have detailed, publicly available specifications.
And you don't have to be shopping for expensive electronics to benefit.
You can use ChatGPT to compare kitchen appliances, furniture, art supplies, photography equipment, clothing, gaming accessories, and practically anything else with meaningful differences in features, quality, or price.
For me, the biggest benefit has been learning how to shop more intelligently.
I used to evaluate a lot of accessories based on their appearance, price, customer ratings, and whether they had the connections I needed.
Now I understand that the underlying specifications can matter just as much as the physical design.
And once you begin understanding those specifications, shopping becomes a very different experience.
Instead of wondering whether something will do what you need, you can research its capabilities, compare alternatives, ask better questions, and make a more informed decision.
ChatGPT doesn't replace your judgment.
It gives you more information to work with before you spend your money.
And sometimes, that's the difference between buying something because it looks right and buying something because you actually understand what you're getting.
